SWIMMING THE STRAITS OF MESSINA

One of Italys most spectacular amateur swimming events, the annual race across the Straits of Messina between Sicily and the Italian peninsula, is scheduled for the 10 th August. The race, which is into its 44 th year, is open to all the foreigners and Italians, young and old, professionals and amateurs - and is seen more as a fun event than a serious race. The youngest swimmer to have achieved the crossing so far was 10 year-old Giuseppe Mangano in 1996. Competitors leave from Cape Peloro on the Sicilian coast and finish at Punta Pezzo near the port of Villa San Giovanni in Calabria, covering a total distance of around 5,5 kilometres in what coast guards warn can be tricky conditions with strong undercurrents.
