MILAN,CHIARAVALLE ABBEY FRESCOES RESTORED

A rare medieval cycle of frescoes in the Cistercian Abbey of Chiaravalle, near Milan, have returned to the light after a seven-year restoration project. The frescoes, dedicated to the death of the Virgin, are by Stefano Fiorentino, one of Giottos most gifted pupils, praised by the famous Renaissance art critic Giorgio Vasari.

The Abbey of Chiaravalle is considered to be one of the finest monastic buildings in Italy. Among its many works of art is the choir, carved by Carlo Garavaglia in 1645 and with 144 seats representing the life of St. Bernard. It also contains  the 1512 painting by Bernardino Luini known as the Goodnight Madonna because of its position at the top of the stairs leading to the monks dormitory
