MERANO: BUNKER MUSEUMS

During the summer, the town of Merano in Alto Adige is organizing a series of fascinating excursions in the series of underground bunkers constructed in the mountains during the first and second World Wars. The bunkers continued to be used by the army during the Cold War period, but were subsequently abandoned. They have now been transformed into museums and art galleries open to the public.

These include the Moso bunker in Val Passiria, the Tel Bunker in Val Venosta, the Passo Palade bunker, with four levels of galleries cut out of the rock, the Museo del Passo on the Austrian border and the Monteneve zinc and lead mine, the highest mine in Europe, situated at 2,335m up the mountainside and with over 150 km of galleries and shafts, documenting the lives and labour of the Val Passeria miners of yesteryear.
