MATERA GUINNESS RECORD LIVING CRIB

Visitors looking for a Christmas with a difference can head for the unique cavern city of Matera in Basilicata to see the worlds biggest living crib, with over  600 live characters representing the birth of Christ.

Regarded as the disgrace of Italy in Fascist times due to the extreme poverty of the inhabitants living in grottoes carved out of the rocks, Matera is now a desirable tourist destination, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and known for its splendid rock churches, monuments and the cave dwellings which have now been converted into bars and galleries.

The Living Nativity Scene, staged for the first time in 2010, attracted over 60,000 visitors in one day and entered the Guinness Book of Records. This year version, nominated the Presepe d'Amore (Christmas crib of Love) has been extended to cover the four days between 27-30 December 2011 and will cover a 700-metre route through the most evocative streets and corners of the old town. Part of the proceeds of the four-day event will be devolved to charity.
