POPE JOHN XXIII AT LORETO

The city of Loreto (Marche), which contains one of  Italys most important shrines dedicated to the Madonna, will commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of  the pilgrimage made by the late Pope John XXIII to Loreto and Assisi 1963.

The event, linked to the Second Ecumenical Council, one of the most important religious meetings of the twentieth century, was also a landmark occasion. It was the first time that a Pope had left the Vatican since 1857 when Pope Pius IX made his last pastoral visit to the pontifical state before it was incorporated into the newly founded Kingdom of Italy.

The exhibition will be housed in the spectacular Cantine di Bramante in the Palazzo Apostolico in Loreto and also pays tribute to the present Pope Benedict XVI, who will also visit Loreto on the 4 October 2012, following in the footsteps of his predecessor.

Among the objects on show there will be the Mercedes Benz 300D that conveyed the Pope from Loreto railway station to the Sanctuary and the golden bejeweled crowns Pope John presented to the Madonna and Child of Loreto.

The exhibition will run from the 30 September 2012  till the 27 January 2013.
