THE BOXER FLIES TO NEW YORK

Guide of Rome: LYSIPPUS' BOXER IS RESTING AT PALAZZO MASSIMO.

One of the most famous sculptures of antiquity, the bronze Boxer one of the jewels of the Palazzo Massimo collection, Rome, is to represent Italy at New York. The statue of a resting boxer, his hands protected by gloves, will be on show at the Metropolitan Museum from the 3 June 2013.

The sculpture was discovered during exploration of the former Baths of Constantine on the Quirinale Hill in 1885. Miraculously intact, it is traditionally dated to the Hellenistic Lysippus School of the fourth century BC, though some experts believe it to be later.

The precious work, considered to be one of the world's most important pieces of sculpture, is at present on exhibit in Berlin and will be flown directly from Germany to the USA, guarded by Palazzo Massimo curator, Rita Paris.
