Pope Francis made the surprise announcement Friday 13th March that he would hold a Holy Year in 2015/2016, starting on the 8th December 2015, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, when the solemn ceremony of the opening of the Holy Door of St. Peter's will also take place to mark the start of the Holy Year. The theme of the event, which is expected to draw millions of Catholics as well as non Catholics who are inspired by the Pope's reforms, will be misericordia, or mercy and compassion.
The last Jubilee was in 2000 under Pope John  Paul II, who also held an extraordinary Holy Year in 1983. Normally, Holy Years are held at twenty-five or fifty-year intervals.
The announcement was made on the second anniversary of Pope Francis' pontificate, during which he has introduced many reforms and become one of the most popular Popes in history.
The city of Rome has declared that extraordinary security measures will be in force throughout the entire duration of the event.
