ITALY'S SOLAR REVOLUTION

According to a recent report issued by the International Energy Agency (IEA) to mark World Earth Day 2016, Italy leads the world in use of solar power, with 8% of its entire energy production coming from the sun. With solar panels becoming progressively cheaper over the last 10 years, more and more households have installed panels on their roofs and unused grazing land has been converted into sun farms that feed the national grid.

43% of the country's energy needs are now supplied by renewable energy sources, such as solar power, water power, wind power and geothermal systems. One in five domestic boilers are fuelled by bio-gas produced by agricultural waste.

The declared aim is to boost this percentage up to 50% within the next few years.

The IEA was founded in France in 1974 to monitor and report on world energy sources, including crude oil, gas, coal and renewable. At present it has 29 member countries committed to a policy of promoting energy efficiency.
