MANTEGNA REDISCOVERED

Risultati immagini per mantegna resurrezione

A scoop for the Accademia Carrara of Bergamo (Lombardy): the Mantegna Resurrection in their collection, hitherto believed to be a copy, has now been declared the original work of the great  renaissance master, Andrea Mantegna.

Like so many Italian art works of that period, it had been divided and the parts sold separately. Originally, it was attached to The Descent into Limbo, which was part of the private collection of the Johnson & Johnson family. It was sold to an anonymous buyer in 2003. Three other parts of the composition are in Florence.

For two centuries, the Resurrection was considered a copy and languished in the deposits of the Bergamo museum until curator and art expert Giovanni Valagussa took it out to examine it. Subsequently, the experts of the Metropolitan Museum of New York confirmed his hunch that he had a genuine Mantegna masterpiece in his hands, dated to around 1492-93.

The work will remain in the Accademia Carrara, taking its rightful place among the other masterpieces in the collection, including a Madonna and Child, also by Mantegna.
