Italy gained another nomination at the recent session of the World Heritage Committee of UNESCO, held in Baku, when the Prosecco wine-producing area of Treviso between Conegliano and Valdobbiadene was unanimously voted to become part of the worldwide family of World Heritage Sites. The area is characterized by the ciglioni, a series of raised earthworks running round the steep hillsides and planted with vineyards, forming a unique man-made landscape. The nomination keeps Italy in the lead with 55 World Heritage sites, followed by China, with 53, and Spain (48). Prosecco sparkling wine has known a boom worldwide in recent years, along with other Italian spumantes. At the 2019 Champagne and Sparkling Wine World Championships in London, Italy surpassed France by scooping up 71 gold medals and 92 silvers.A surprising newcomer to the prizewinning table was Lambrusco, hitherto not considered a wine of high quality, while the Wine Cellar of the Year award went to the prestigious cantina Ferrari (Trento).According to latest figures, 700 million bottles of Italian spumante were consumed worldwide last year.
