CASTEL SAN PIETRO THE MOST BEAUTIFUL BORGO

The medieval village of Castel San Pietro, perched on a rock above Palestrina (Lazio), has been chosen as the winner of this year's contest for the (slightly pretentious) title of Most Beautiful Borgo of the Mediterranean. The organization is an offshoot of the prestigious and better known Borghi Piu Belli d'Italia and is promoted by the Apulia region. The competition is aimed at small towns with historic centres inhabited by less than 2000 residents. Castel San Pietro is already listed as one of the Borghi Piu Belli d'Italia. Its winding streets, historic churches and the towering Colonna Fortress have frequently attracted historic film directors, such as Luigi Comencini, who launched Gina Lollobrigida in the successful Italian comedy Bread, Love and Jealousy, set in the village.
