Venice joins the list of Italian landmarks illuminated in green, white and red, the three colours of the national flag, as a gesture of hope and solidarity during the present coronavirus epidemic. Every evening at 8 pm the iconic monument will take on a new look for as long as the emergency lasts, Venice mayor, Luca Brugnaro, announced. The initiative joins others that sparked off with the celebration of the official date of the Unification of Italy (17 March 1861) when many Italian cities projected the Italian flag on the facades of the most significant buildings and monuments. The gesture will take on a special significance on Liberation Day, 25th April, a national holiday which celebrates the end of the occupation of Italy in WWII.
