The 2008 Globo d'Oro (Golden Globe), the annual prize awarded to Italian cinema by the association of Foreign Correspondents in Italy, went to Paolo Virzi Tutta la Vita Davanti (trans. All their Life Ahead of Them), a bitterly ironic depiction of conditions of life and work in a call centre. Leading actress in the film, Sabrina Ferilli, scooped up the Best Actress nomination.

Lando Buzzanca was voted Best Actor for his role in Roberto Faenzas , based on the 19th century Sicilian saga of the aristocratic Uzeda family by Federico De Roberto.

Best European Film went to Irina Palm by Sam Garbarski. Others awards included: Best European Actress for Maria De Madieros; European Golden Globe for Caterina Murino; Film to Remember for Carlo Lizzanis wartime drama Hotel Meina, which was also voted Film with the Best Background Music, composed by Luis Enrique Bacalov.

A special prize went to Sicilian director Salvatore Mereu for their careers were given to director Liliana Cavani and actor Giuliano Gemma.

The Globo d'Oro awards highlight the renewed quality and vitality of Italian cinema, which received important recognition in this years Cannes Film Festival and which continues to attract new audiences abroad, especially in East European countries and Russia, in addition to its principal established markets in South America.

 The prize-giving ceremony was held in the splendid torchlit gardens of Villa Massimo, former residence of the ancient noble Massimo family and now seat of the German Academy in Rome.
