NEW UNESCO SITES FOR ITALY

Two new Italian sites, plus one shared between Italy and Switzerland, have been added to this years list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, bringing the Italian total up to a record 43 places of the highest number in any one country.

The new Italian jewels are the towns of Mantova and Sabbioneta, judged by the UNESCO committee, which met this year in Quebec City, Canada, exceptional examples of Renaissance architecture and town planning, as well as the Retica mountain railway that runs over the Alps, connecting Tirano (in Italy) with Saint-Moritz in Switzerland. The little Republic of San Marino, which is an independent state within Italian territory, also entered this years list.
