MADE IN ITALY ???

The famous Made in Italy label is universally recognized as a guarantee of excellence. But with many manufacturers moving their operations to countries where labour is cheaper, how reliable is this Made in Italy logo? The problem is currently under EU examination with view to producing clearer labelling that would stipulate where articles are actually manufactured by European designers.

A survey, carried out by the economic section of Italys leading daily, Corriere della Sera, has revealed where many of Italys leading fashion houses actually produce their goods. Results indicate that the high fashion top end of the market uses exclusively Italian materials and labour, whereas cheaper and more casual lines, including sports shoes, are made in Eastern Europe, Asia and North Africa.

The purest Made in Italy designers and manufacturers include Brioni, which makes 100% of its immaculately tailored suits in its own establishment in Italy,  the jewellers Bulgari (100% for jewellery and accessories. Its watches are made in Switzerland), Gucci (95% in Italy, watches Swiss made), Ferragamo (100% in Italy, except for its Swiss watches),  Canali and Corneliani (100% Italian made products). Other famous designers, such as Armani, Prada, Dolce & Gabbana, Valentino and Zegna, tend to produce their most prestigious lines largely in Italy, with their lower priced products and accessories farmed out to areas with cheaper labour.
