CARAVAGGIO, "NEW" WORK ON VIEW

As part of the 4 th centennary of the death of the artist Michaelangelo Merisi, better known as Caravaggio, his wall painting of Jove, Neptune and Pluto in the Boncompagni Ludovisi Palace in Rome has, for the first time, been made available for public viewing. This work is the only wall painting in oils known to have been done by Caravaggio. The three gods symbolize air, fire and water and are shown at a curious angle. Caravaggio used himself as a model , posing nude on the scaffolding and copying the reflection of parts of his body in a mirror.

A major exhibition on Caravaggio is also running in the Scuderie del Quirinale (former Royal Stables of the Quirinale Palace, now residence of the President of Italy)  in Rome  until the 13 th June 2010.
