GENZANO FLOWER FESTVAL

The small town of Genzano, in the Castelli Romani near Rome, is to hold the 232 nd edition of its famous Flower Festival on the 11-14 June 2010. This year, the floral pictures which carpet the main street will be inspired by the works of Michelangelo Merisi, better known as Caravaggio. 2010, in fact, is the 400 th anniversary of the painters death in 1610.

The floral compositions, made entirely of different coloured flower petals and greenery, are laid out by teams of local people as an act of devotion to mark the Feast of Corpus Domini. In the past, many celebrated foreign  artists and writers on the Grand Tour have recorded their impression of the Genzano Infiorata, including Danish writer Hans Christian Andersen, who visited in 1834, and choreographer August Bourneville, who created the ballet Bromsterfesten di Genzano (Flower Festival of Genzano) in 1841.
