UMBRIA ANGELS AND DEMONS SACRED MUSIC FESTIVAL

The 67 edition of the Sagra Musicale Umbra sacred music festival takes place between the 7-15 September 2012. Spread over the neighbouring towns of Perugia, San Gemini, Montefalco, Castel Rigone, Torgiano and Solomeo, the Festival features compositions from all over the world competing in the Sacred Music contest for the prize dedicated to Perugia-born composer and musician Francesco Siciliani, organized by the Perugia Foundation of Classical Music and the Pontificial Council of Culture.

Entitled Angels and Demons it features 200 scores from composers from countries as far flung as Canada, Australia, Israel, Thailand, Guatemala and Indonesia, in addition to most European countries. The intention of the competition is to stimulate the creation of new sacred music and organizers were surprised and gratified by the wide number of entries they received.

Compositions are for choir with or without organ accompaniment on the theme Simbolo Apostolico in honour of the Year of Faith proclaimed by Pope Benedict XVI. The concert of the three finalists will be held at the Basilica of San Pietro in Perugia on the 14 September with the St. Jacobs Choir of Stockholm directed by Gary Graden and will be repeated in Florence Cathedral the following day.
