VENICE GUGGENHEIM EXPANDS

The Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice has acquired an additional 83 works by modern artists, donated by collector Hannelore Schulhof, who died earlier this year. The Schulhof Collection, created by Hannelore and her husband Rudolph, who died in1999, contains sculptures, paintings and art works by some of the leading European and American post-War artists, such as Alberto Burri, Willem de Kooning, Lucio Fontana, Jean Dubuffet, Mark Rothko, Cy Twombly, Andy Warhol, Marino Marini and many others.

Five of the 11 sculptures will be placed in the second garden, which will be dedicated to the Schulhof family, while a Calder creation will be dominate the view over the Grand Canal. Other works will gradually take over the space at present containing the Mattioli Collection, which will be moved to the rooms at present reserved for exhibitions. Palazzo Venier dei Leoni, in fact, is becoming too small to house the entire Guggenheim collection and has been looking for space to expand.

On the 12 October, the gallery will be open free of charge between 5-8 pm to show visitors the new collection.
