MOZZARELLA DI BUFALA CAMPANA DOP PROMOTIONAL DRIVE

The consortium of Mozzarella di Bufala Campana DOP has embarked on an extensive promotional drive to make consumers aware of the difference in quality of the genuine product and its many imitators.

Unfortunately, bufala mozzarella is one of the most commonly faked Italian gastronomic product in the world, lamented Domenico Raimondo, president of the consortium, at a meeting with foreign journalists at the seat of the Foreign Press Association in Rome. Difficulties of effective labeling and short shelf life make this highly specialized product particularly vulnerable to imitation.

Renowned Italian chef, Gennaro Esposito of the Torre del Saraceno restaurant, Vico Equense, acted as testimonial of the meeting and warned against poor quality low cost mozzarella. Genuine mozzarella di bufala campana requires highly skilled production methods. It cannot be a cheap product. Once consumers taste the difference, however, they stick to the real thing.

In order to promote their territory, the consortium has created Le Strade della Mozzarella (Mozzarella Routes), an annual event where visitors can visit farms as well as the local archaeological sites, historic towns and beaches along the Cilento coast. The next edition will be at Paestum between the 6-8 May 2013. The event promises to be a gourmet dream, a showcase of the best food products of Italy south, and with a large number of Italys most famous chefs demonstrating their skills.
