ROME MUSEUMS SPECIAL OPENINGS

On Saturday 28 September 2013, as part of the European Heritage Day celebration, Romes civic museums and archaeological sites throw open their doors with free entry for the public and a series of coordinated cultural events. This will also be a rare opportunity to visit some lesser known sites, such as the Insula Romana on the Ara Coeli hill, beside the Campidoglio, the Sacred Area of St. Omobono and the Temple of Mithras in the Via dei Cerchi, a rare surviving example of the secret Persian cult that once flourished in ancient Rome.

The Appia Antica will be highlighted with guided tours and an exhibition in the museum of the ex-Cartiera Latina, while a Day in Ostia Antica will include guided visits to the old Port of Trajan and the Castle of Pope Julius II.

The day coincides with the special free evening openings of cultural sites and museums run by the Italian Ministry of Heritage (Mibac),  every last Saturday of the month. To note: the Five Senses + 1 event dedicated to hearing at the Etruscan museum of Villa Giulia, on the theme of music at the time of the Etruscans, as well as a lecture on Music at the Court of Julius III.
