ROME BOTANICAL GARDEN BLOOMS A NEW

Romes Botanical Garden will finish restoring five of its historic hothouses in time for the summer season. The garden extends over 12 hectares and dates in its present form to 1883, though it was founded much earlier as a medicinal herbal garden by Pope Niccola III at the end of the 13th century.

A section is still devoted to herbs, with a collection of over 300 species. Other areas of special charm are the Japanese Garden, the Valley of Ferns and the Bamboo Grove. Visitors will be able to benefit from new technology that will describe the historic, architectural and botanic patrimony of the Gardens, which they can access through their smartphones and tablets.

The garden lies in Trastevere, at the foot of the Janiculum hill, and next door to the 17th century Corsini Palace with an important collection of old masters.  Queen Cristina of Sweden, who abdicated and converted to Roman Catholicism, lived in the palace between 1659-89.
