ROME'S THIRD METRO OPENS

The opening of the long-awaited Metro C line in Rome was greeted by a festive crowd of passengers keen to be the first to travel on the new transport system which connects the Roman countryside with the city centre.

Over twenty years have passed since the plans for the Metro C were approved, but work was held up by a succession of hitches, archaeological finds and slow funding while costs rocketed. At the moment, only fifteen stations have been completed, linking the town of Montecompatri in Rome's hinterland with the suburban Centocelle Park, but Rome's city council hope to open another six stations in 2015. These would connect the C line to the hub at St. John Lateran, served by the A line that crosses the city from north to south. The C should eventually reach central Rome, with stops at both Piazza Venezia and the Vatican. This, however, is not estimated to happen before 2020.
