The fortified town of Montone (Perugia, Umbria) classified among â Borghi Piů Belli d'Italia (Italy'sMost Beautiful Historic Towns),celebrates Easter Monday with a pageant in honour of The Holy Thorn. The relic, believed to be one of the thorns from the crown Christ wore at his cruxifiction, is normally kept in the parish church and is brought out only twice a year, on the 2 April and the second last Sunday in August.

The picturesque costumed procession is headed by the medieval soldier of fortune Carlo Fortebracci, who is believed to have received the Holy Thorn from the Venetian Republic, as a reward for military support. According to legend, the thorn flowers on Good Friday, filling the air with a sweet perfume.

After the solemnities, visitors can enjoy the medieval market, with arts and crafts, collective games in the town square, puppet shows for the children and a flag throwing display.
