One of the most exciting archaeological finds of recent years in Umbria, the ancient Roman Villa of the Mosaics in Spello, is now open to the public. Discovered in 2005, during work to create a parking lot, 500 sqm of a luxurious imperial villa have subsequently been excavated, revealing a series of rooms decorated with polychrome mosaics and stuccoed walls.
The site includes the banqueting hall with scenes of wine, feasting and the seasons, and the peristyle around a central garden that opens onto various rooms decorated with birds, a radiant sun, shields and geometric patterns, as well as a room that was heated.
The Villa of the Mosaics is now protected in a museum structure (inaugurated on the 24 March 2018), equipped with the latest multi-medial aids to bring the past to life.
