AOSTA 'S THOUSAND CRAFTS

The annual Sant'Orso Fair at Aosta (the autonomous region of Valle d'Aosta) is the region's most important winter event. During the Fair (30th -31st January 2017) a thousand craftspeople will converge on the town to exhibit their skills. which include ancient traditional arts such as tombola lace-making, hemp weaving, basketry, wood carving, clog making, copper beating and many others.

Naturally, food will also feature largely, with restaurants serving the excellent local cuisine and speciality local cheeses and wines to be sampled.

The Fair has run continuously every year since the Middle Ages.  It is held in honour of Saint Orso who, according to legend, gave pairs of sabot (wooden clogs) to the poor.

The event draws thousands of visitors every year and local hotels offer special bargain packages combining the fun of the Fair with skiing on the 70 kms ski slopes in the area.
