The Maritime Theatre, one of the most spectacular buildings in Hadrian's Villa at Tivoli, is once more open to the public after a three-year long restoration. The Theatre, which is actually a small pillared island, surrounded by a moat and connected by a narrow bridge, is believed to have been the Emperor's private retreat, where he withdrew to meditate and escape from the cares and pressures of government.
