TURIN: MEDIEVAL GARDEN

The newly recreated Medieval Garden in the moat of Palazzo Madama, Turin, opened at the beginning of July. The historic garden was first documented in 1402 when, according to city archives, Prince Ludovico of Acaia, Lord of Piedmont and founder of the University of Turin, dedicated garden space around his castle.

The new garden follows the original Medieval plan, respecting the traditional divisions of garden space into the hortus (vegetable garden), the viridarium (orchard and trees) and the iardinum domini (princes garden, which was more practical than decorative, with an aviary for falcons, a pigsty and an enclosure for hens). The Medieval Garden has been set out in a similar way, using the same plants that would have featured in the original garden.

The Medieval Garden is open Tues-Sat between 10-18 and on Sun 10-20. Closed Mon.
