Until September 23, 2013, the Baptistery of the church of San Giovanni Battista in Florence will be open to visitors on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings until 11pm. On the other days of the week it will close as usual at 7 pm.

The Baptistery attracts 300,000 visitors per year. Many famous people were christened here, including Dante (1266), Amerigo Vespucci (1454), Macchiavelli (1469), Lisa Gherardini (the model for the famous Mona Lisa in 1479), Carlo Collodi (the author of Pinocchioť) in 1826 and Antonio Meucci, inventor of the telephone (1808).
