Postignano, a former abandoned hill village in the Monti Sibillini National Park of Umbria, has gained the UNESCO Award of Merit in the recent La Fabbrica del Paesaggio (Constructing the Landscape) contest, sponsored by the Italian Federations of UNESCO clubs and associations.
The recovery of Postignano is the work of architects Matteo Scaramella and Gennaro Matacena, who saw the potential to create an albergo diffuso (village hotel, where the rooms are distributed throughout various restored buildings) in the old town.
Postignano was badly damaged in the 1997 earthquake and in 2004 it was declared a monument of national interest by the Italian Heritage Ministry. Restoration began in 2007. The town now has 60 unique homes clustered round the tower and the frescoed church, as well as 12 residences now open for guests, in addition to a restaurant and other facilities.
