ORVIETO PALACE OF WINE AND TASTE

Italy abounds in imaginative and tasteful conversions of historic buildings and the Palazzo del Gusto (Palace of Taste) of Orvieto (Umbria) is an outstanding example of a renaissance convent transformed into a modern temple of wine, food and culture. The building has a long history. Formerly the Monastery of St. John, it was a Roman sanctuary dedicated to Jove prior to that and also a Roman theatre.

The monastery cellars are now the seat of the Umbria Regional Enoteca, where it is possible to find the entire range of the region's wines, such as the celebrated Orvieto DOC white, exported all over the world. The DOC area is divided into Orvieto Classico, which comes from the zone immediately surrounding the city and Orvieto, produced to the north and south of this area, while the red DOC Rosso Orvietano is typical of the province of Terni. Other highly appreciated Umbria wines include Sagrantino di Montefalco, Torgiano, Trasimeno and Amerino.

Visitors can book tastings under the guidance of a professional sommelier. In addition, the Palazzo del Gusto organizes courses of regional cooking for interested tourist groups.
