CASTELLANZA CAI CELEBRATES MATTERHORN

Risultati immagini per monte cervino

The Italian Alpine Club (CAI) of Castellanza (Lombardy) is celebrating the 150th anniversay of the conquest of Mt. Cervino, known in English as the Matterhorn, the pinnacle mountain that straddles the Alps between Italy and Switzerland.

In 1865, the 4,478m summit was reached for the first time by a party led by English mountaineer, Edward Whymper, with fierce competition from a French party attempting the ascent by another route. Although it was hailed as a great achievement, Whymper's conquest, was, however, marred by tragedy, as four of the men in his expedition died during the descent.

The Castellanza Alpine Club is combining the event with a celebration of its own  70th anniversary of its foundation  with an exhibition of photographs by mountain and nature photographer Franco Restrelli at the aristocratic Villa Pomini, Castellanza.

The exhibition is open until the 3rd June 2015 at the following hours: Tues-Thurs & Sat: 15-19, Sun: 10-12.30 and 15-19
