The famous botanical gardens of Castle Trauttmansdorff at Merano (Alto Adige) welcomed their fifth million visitor on the 24th June 2015 since they opened to the public on the 16th June 2001. The gardens have now become the biggest tourist attraction in the region, drawing visitors from some 90 different countries.

The gardens, known as the Gardens of Sissi after the fondly remembered Elizabeth, 19th century Empress of Austria and Queen of Hungary, who loved the residence and its grounds, were nominated International Garden of the Year in 2013.

The popularity of the 12 hectare-estate is also thanks to the imaginative programmes, introduced by Merano throughout the summer. This year's novelty is the new aperitif Lilypond served in the grounds after sunset. A cocktail composed of Prosecco and passion fruit with a touch of lime and candied sugar, it is already scoring a hit with romantic couples who like to stroll around the moonlit paths. A shuttle bus connects the castle with the town's main squares.

In the summer months of June, July and August, the gardens are open between 9 am and 11 pm.
