Italy's prestigious annual wine fair VINITALY 2016 chalked up record figures on its 50th birthday confirming Italy's position as the leading country of wine production and wine exportation in the world. A packed four days of events and tastings drew record crowds to the Verona Fair, which hosted a record number of exhibitors (4,100, including 147 from abroad).

The success is due to the professionalism of Italy's wine growers, who have concentrated on  producing distinctive quality wines. The re-discovery of the vast variety of exclusively native vine stock – estimates run to some 500 different types - has also contributed to the diffusion of many unique regional wines.

Vinitaly had a timid debut in 1967. Two years later it was exhibiting 130 wine cellars and in 1978 it obtained international exhibition qualifications. 1992 saw the introduction of the International Wine Competition, considered the most selective in the world, with only 90 medals awarded on average among thousands of competitors from some 30 countries. The Taste of Italy pavilion at EXPO Milan 2015 exhbited 3,600 labels and was visited by 2.1 million people.

The Verona Fair is only the start of the year's activities, which include Vinitaly fairs in Chicago, New York, Shanghai, Hong Kong and Moscow. The year rounds off back in Verona with the Wine2Wine business event.
