According to recent market research, holiday homes in Italy's beautiful old borghi (historic towns

and town centres) are in increasing demand.

Bargains are to be got in the regions of Molise, Calabria and parts of Irpinia, where country houses can be found for around 500 per sq.m.  For 1000 per sq.m you can buy a characteristic trullo in Apulia or a typical house in Salento, with the exception of the charming town of Atrani where prices reach over 5.000 per sq.m..

The most expensive properties are situated in noted beauty spots like the Amalfi Coast, the Cinque Terre in Ligury and Monte Argentario at Grosseto (Tuscany), but the most expensive borgo of all  to put down roots is the little known Laigueglia at Savona. A square metre there costs around 5.499.

Near Rome, the summer papal retreat of Castelgandolfo has properties for an average 2.495 per sq.m. and near Milan Morimondo costs around 2.238 per sq.m.
