The Benedictine monks of the earthquake-shattered Umbria archidiocese of Spoleto-Norcia have set up a blog with information and updates on the situation in the area round Amatrice.  Norcia, the  birthplace of St. Benedict, is well-known to the US Catholic communities as a group of American Benedictines re-founded the monastic community, which is also linked both to St. Francis of Assisi, in 2000. The monks of Norcia are also celebrated for the Birra Nusia beer they produce.

When the fatal earthquake struck, there were fifteen monks, plus five prigrims staying in the monastery. All were saved, though the medieval monastery was badly damaged. The community has since transferred to Rome, leaving two monks to keep an eye on the Norcia house.

All the churches and holy houses in Norcia and nearby Preci have suffered considerable damage, as well as the ancient Abbey of S. Eutizio in the Valnerina Valley.
