SPELACCHIO CHAPTER 2

As Hans Christian Andersen explained so well, Ugly Ducklings can turn into Swans. Poor Spelacchio, the ugliest Christmas Tree in Italy, became beloved by the people of Rome, who queued up to take souvenir selfies under its scrawny branches. Children left messages of affection. Adults posted wish notes around its vase. It became one of the most desirable sights to see for tourists to Rome in the festive season, almost rivalling the Colosseum.

Now Spelacchio's days of glory are over and the time for its removal has arrived. But.....what to do with it? The giant fir is now a corpse, but no-one has the courage to simply chop it up for firewood. The various suggestions include carving it up to sell as souvenirs, use the wood to build a not-better-qualified “Wendy house for mothers and children”  or give it eternal life inside one of Rome's museums.

Whatever happens, Spelacchio can hold its head up with pride. Initially ridiculed and insulted, it ends its life as a star.
