Wildlife enthusiasts have been excited to hear about the return of the wolf to the Rome area. Rangers patrolling the Castelli Romani hills less than 30 kms south of the city reported finding wolf pack tracks during the snowfalls this month, March 2018.

This news follows the sighting of a family of wolves with two cubs in the Castel di Guido Bird Sanctuary to the north of Rome. The Park rangers have christened the male Romulus in honour of the fabled founder of Rome, who was said to have been suckled by a wolf

The wolf was virtually extinct in Italy until some fifty years ago, when it was introduced into the National Park of Abruzzo – a vast wildlife area. The St. Francis Operation, as it was called, in honour of the saint's celebrated taming of a wolf, has been so successful that the wolf population has grown and the animals are now moving into new territory.

Conservationists welcome the advent of the wolf as it will keep down the population of wild boar. These animals are becoming a major problem. They have been spotted raiding rubbish bins within the city limits and are known to be aggressive if they feel threatened.
