Bass Huang Junpeng was the winner of the recent Italy-China opera singers' contest at the Music Conservatory of Santa Cecilia, Rome, in which five Italian sopranos, tenors and bass students pitted their voices against five Chinese students from Peking and Hong Kong.
La Grande Occasione (the Great Opportunity) event was organized by the Associazione Lirico Musicale Culturale Beniamino Gigli JR, the opera music association founded by the grandson of the great Italian tenor as part of an ambitious project to promote opera internationally and help launch young singers. Conservatory Director, Roberto Giuliani, praised the initiative, saying how difficult it often was, even after many years of hard study, for young and talented singers to enter the professional world
The jury, which had the hard task of selecting the winners, was presided over by celebrated opera singer, Cecilia Gasdia, director of the Arena of Verona. Runners up were Italian Valerio Mengoni (tenor) and Ma Jun (tenor).
