MYSTERIOUS MADONNA

Risultato immagine per madonna della fabrica di san pietro

For the very first time, the public can admire a splendid renaissance Madonna and Child by an unknown artist, commissioned in 1519 for the Church of San Giacomo Scossacavalli in Rome.

The church, along with all the surrounding buildings, was demolished in 1937 to make room for Via della Conciliazione, the spacious boulevard that constituted the new approach to St. Peter's. At that point the painting was transferred to the Fabbrica di San Pietro, Rome. The painting suffered bad water damage, probably during the flood of the Tiber in 1598, which submerged much of the church. The tide mark is still visible on the chin of the Virgin.

After two years of delicate restoration work, the Madonna and Child are on view in Turin at Palazzo Madama until the 16 July 2018, after which it will be returned to the Vatican.
