CAPRI' S VIA KRUPP REOPENS @ 10 Jul 2008

The spectacular Via Krupp, which links the towns of Capri and Marina Piccola on the island of Capri, has finally reopened after 32 years. The famous pedestrian road, which snakes steeply down the cliffside in a series of hairpin bends, was commissioned by German industrialist Friedrich Alfred Krupp at the beginning of last century. The footpath, designed by local engineer Emilio Mayer is considered to be one of the finest examples of engineering that blends perfectly with the natural landscape and was a favourite theme of artists and photographers visiting the island. The road was closed for safety reasons in 1976 and has only now become once more viable after many delays and setbacks in the difficult repair process.
