SLOWLY DOES IT @ 21 Mar 2009

The 3 rd World Slow Day, invented by a stressed Italian manager, has now spread outside Italys borders and was celebrated last week in various countries. Bruno Contigiano, the communications executive who found the pace of modern life too fast, created the Slow Day because he feels that everyone caught up in the hectic pace of modern industrialised society needs to stop every so often and take stock of his/her life.

Slowness tends to be seen as something negative, he commented in a recent interview, adding that the real reason for rushing through the day was fear: When people are afraid, they run with their heads down. They dont know where they are going but they run anyway. We propose they should stop for a moment and look around them to better decide where they are heading.

Silence, friendliness and courtesy are also part of the Slow Day creed. Contigiano advocates greeting strangers in the street (youll get an extraordinary dose of positive energy in return. Just try it!) The Day was celebrated in various ways in different places. In Barcelona, one museum adhered by issuing slippers to visitors, while the Italian Institute in Tokyo is staging a photographic exhibition on the theme of time. Slow marathons were also held in several Italian cities, where the last person to arrive was the winner.
