ROME TOPS FOR TOURISM @ 31 Jul 2010

Despite a slight drop in tourist arrivals, due to the international financial crisis, Rome has maintained its position as a world leader in the tourism field. 2009 saw a decrease of -1.3% tourist presences, but 2010 already shows a promising rise of 5-6%.

Lazio Region also stands up well, with 13.2 million arrivals and 34,4 million presences. This puts it in third place, behind the Region of Paris (Ille de France) and London and well ahead of other European cities such as Madrid (9.7 million arrivals), Berlin (7.9 million) and Athens (3.4 million). This is a notable achievement, if we consider that Lazio has to compete with other Italian cities like Venice, Florence and Naples. Romes province absorbs 90% of all tourist arrivals to Italy. In addition to the faithful British, Spanish and American visitors, new markets such as China, India and Korea are building up. Local government is thus investing in high speed train links with other Italian cities, and expansion plans are underfoot for Romes Leonardo da Vinci Airport and the sea ports of Civitavecchia, Fiumicino and Gaeta.

The Region also plans to develop the LazioFeste project in order to attract more visitors to the many interesting places outside Rome. A new website (www.laziofeste.it) to advertise the 800 cultural and folkloristic events that are staged regularly in the 378 comunes of the region.
