MARCHE: THE NEW FLORIDA '? @ 28 Sep 2010

AARP, the popular American magazine for the Young Old generation, has indicated the Marche region of Italy as one of the top five most desirable destinations in the world to retire to. The magazine is quoted as saying: Marche has everything: splendid beaches, flourishing vineyards, endless art and architecture, some of Italys best fish dishes and snowy mountains for winter sports.

The article goes on to say that, in addition, Marche has an excellent climate, a good public health service and open air opera festivals at reasonable prices.

The Marche regional government believes that much of the merit of putting Marche on the USA visitors map is thanks to the promotional campaign that they launched at the beginning of the year, with Dustin Hoffman (no less!) engaged to read excerpts from the famous Italian poet, Giacomo Leopardi, a native of the region. The initiative caused a furore in Italy, partly because of the cost of hiring such a big international star as Hoffman, and partly because the actors pronunciation left much to be desired. However, it did the trick and captured the imagination of the American public.

The AARP magazine launches Marche as the next in Italian region, now that both Tuscany and Umbria have become too expensive.
