PADOVA: VILLA DEI VESCOVI REOPENS @ 04 Jul 2011

Hotel Petrarca - Riapre Villa dei Vescovi e continua la nostra ...
After a series of restorations extending over four years, the Villa dei Vescovi, considered a masterpiece of Renaissance architecture, has re-opened its doors. Situated in the Euganei hills at Luvigliano di Torreglia, near Padova (Padua), the villa is considered to be the first example of a what was a new renaissance trend, an aristocratic dwelling conceived and constructed specifically for country life.

The villa inspired Palladio when he designed La Rotonda, one of the most famous Veneto villas on the banks of the Po. Built by the Bishop of Padova, Francesco Pisani, between 1535 and 1542, the Villa dei Vescovi was conceived as a peaceful retreat, harmonizing with the surrounding Nature. Among the artists involved in its embellishment were Giulio Romano, Giovanni Maria Falconetto, Andrea della Valle and the Flemish artist Lambert Sustris.

The Villa was donated in 2005 to the FAI (Italian Foundation for the Environment), which undertook the 7m restoration, with the backing of a number of banks, foundations and private citizens.
