VILLA DELLA PERGOLA: AN ENGLISH GARDEN @ 12 Jun 2012

Villa della Pergola | Small Luxury Hotel ad Alassio

The splendid Villa della Pergola, also known as Villa Hanbury, Alassio (Ligury), is the subject of a new book published by the Italian publishing house Mondadori. Entitled: Un Sogno Inglese in Riviera (An English Dream in the Riviera), with the subtitle: Le stagione di Villa della Pergola (the seasons of Villa della Pergola), the book recounts the history of the 19 th century manor house and its magnificent 22,000 sqm garden.

Virginia Woolf's cousin, Walter Dalrumple, bought the villa from British army veteran General McMurdo in 1900. In 1922, it was purchased by the well-known botanist and pharmacologist Daniel Hanbury, a leading 19 th century expert on medicinal natural remedies, as a summer residence for himself and his family. The villa, called one of the marvels of the Riviera, had many famous guests and the musician Elgar composed his In the South while staying there.

The Villa della Pergola and its companion Villino della Pergola have now been converted into a luxury hotel. During the summer, the park, recently restored, will be open to visitors, subject to prior booking.
