ETRUSCAN BEER"REDISCOVERED" @ 16 Sep 2012

One of the novelties of this years edition of the Salone Internazionale del Gusto (International Taste Fair) at Turin will be the presentation of Birra del Borgo, a reincarnation of the ancient beer of the Etruscans, according to biologist Leonardo Di Vincenzo. After lengthy studies of old documents and archaeological remains, Di Vincenzo believes he has unlocked the secret of the Etruscan formula of fermentation  and ingredients.

The first thousand litres were processed in March 2012 in Borgorose near Rieti, Lazio, and fermented in four big amphoras recreated specially to imitate the ancient brewing methods. The bottled product will debut at the Turin Fair (25-29 October 2012) and will then go on to the Italian gastronomy showplace Eataly in Rome and New York. Among the collaborators Di Vincenzo has chosen to help produce the Birra del Borgo is American Patrick E. McGovern, director of the laboratory of Biomolecular Archaeology of the University of Pennsylvania and brewer Sam Calagione of the US brewery Dogfish Head, who hit the headlines for recreating ancient beers based on ingredients discovered in Egyptian tombs and that of King Midas, ruler of the ancient kingdom of Phrygia.
