ROME FUND RAISING SUCCESS FOR ST. FRANCIS @ 17 Apr 2014

The enterprising Franciscan Brothers of the Roman church of San Francesco a Ripa in Trastevere have managed in little over a month to raise $128.500 to restore the cell where St. Francis of Assisi stayed when he came to visit Pope Innocent III between 1209 and 1223.

The fund raising appeal was launched via Internet on the website Kickstarter and attracted over a thousand one hundred donors, principally from the USA, but also Singapore, Dubai, Russia, Latin America, as well as Italy.

Restoration of the historic shrine includes operations of conservation, such as the removal of the residue of  candle and oil lamp fumes from the walls, renovating the wooden ceiling, the cleaning of the stone Francis used as a pillow and others. The work is expected to last five months and the inauguration of the renovated cell is programmed for the saint's Feast Day on the 4th October 2014 in the presence of Pope Francis.

The Franciscan community plans to promote the shrine as a regular place of pilgrimage for Christian tourists visiting Rome.
