Museo archeologico nazionale di Reggio Calabria - Wikipedia

The National Museum of Magna Graecia in Reggio Calabria, considered to be one of Italy's most important museum of ancient classical art, re-opens its doors on the 30th April 2016 with a splendid new look. The luminous new atrium, designed by architect Alfredo Pirri,  adds a whole new dimension onto the monumental Palazzo Piacentini, built 1932-1941 to house the antiquites from the Italian colonies of ancient Greece, such as Sibari, Crotone, Caulonia and Locri.

Many finds that have been in storage for years, due to lack of exhibition space, will finally be on view, as well as the hitherto inaccessible Hellenistic Tombs discovered inside the museum precincts in 1932. Visitors will now be able to admire the celebrated mosaic featuring gymnasium scenes, revealed by an earthquake in 1908, as well as the rare series of pinakes – votive terracotta tiles discovered in Locri

The pride of the collection remains, of course, the Riace Bronzes. The two warriors have been newly cleaned and restored and set upon specially designed anti-seismic marble pedestals. Visitors enter the Room of the Bronzes via an antichamber with filters to eliminate any microbes that could contaminate the priceless sculptures.

The Museum will also have a new roof garden, complete with café, restaurant and a splendid sea view.

A concert performed by the National Philharmonic Orchestra of the RAI (Italy's state broadcasting company) is to celebrate the inauguration.
