Italy's prize oyster, the Golden Oyster of Goro is on its way to receiving official recognition as another exclusive Italian gastronomic product. Goro, a fishermen's village on the River Po delta, is celebrated for its production of mussels and clams. The Golden Oyster, so-called because of its gold-coloured shell, was known to the ancient Romans but has not been cultivated extensively or marketed  till now.

In 2017 total production of the rare Goro oyster amounted to 8 tons. However, this year the fishermen's cooperative expect to raise production to 20 tons. In addition to the Po Delta, the oyster has also been introduced to several sites on the Adriatic coast, Sardinia and Sicily.
